"DJ Dave Matthias Mixes It Up!"

Santa Rosa's busiest disc spinner, DJ Dave Matthias, has a new club to call home these days, and a new B-52's remix to add to his repertoire.

His new dance abode is called Club 101, and it's located inside the Jok-erz Wild Casino in Petaluma. The Friday and Saturday night dance party features disco, house, club, old school, funk and R&B, all expertly mixed, manipulated and served up by Matthias and Company.

"It's a brand new place," Matthias said. "And it's filling a void. The whole idea behind it is, you know, 'Alright Sonoma County, you've patiently waited for a new night spot and a good place to dance. Here it is.

Friday nights at the 21-and-older club will feature old school, funk and disco with DJ Dan Martinez. Saturdays, Matthias will spin disco and house. He also hopes to feature other guest DJs.

"I'm going to focus on the house music that's on the current Bill board dance charts," Matthias said, "and what's being played in the major nightclubs throughout the country, in the metropolitan areas."

Matthias is no stranger to hosting these weekend dance parties or working with Billboard charts.

In past years, he's led Sonoma County's hip, accessorized masses in their quest to bump and grind at such DJ-dance emporiums as the Funhouse and the Cantina. Now he's hoping to lead them to Petaluma.

"All the people that are going to the city to go to clubs," he said, "we're trying to get them to come to Club 101. They can play the blackjack tables in the casino. There's an all-night restaurant, so they can get food there. They don't have to go to Taco Bell or Lyons in the middle of the night. And best of all, there's no cover charge, and I don't have to close up and throw everybody out at 2am."

Besides starting clubs, Matthias has been busy with his various recording projects for which he is well-known nationally, but has been quietly doing in Sonoma County for many years.

He works with the labels, getting licensing for Hot Tracks, a remix service. He also works as a Billboard reporter, picking music for the dance charts.

The two jobs go very nicely together, since labels send Matthias their material in hopes of getting on Billboard's dance charts - the most popular rating charts in the world. Matthias rates the material, then works to get remix licensing from the labels for the remix work. He looks for the best.

"They know I'm an industry setter. I've had people at the labels go so far as to say things like, 'I'm going to lose my job if you don't help me get this on the chart Dave!", Dave says.

Matthias said there are key things he considers when he's judging material for Billboard's charts. He looks to see what's working when he's spinning at the clubs and on the radio, judging by crowd response and phone calls, and most of all, he relies heavily on his own intuition.

When songs chart, he has easy access to the label to get licensing to make a remix for Hot Tracks. He then works on producing the remixes.

"Remixing can be anything from just restructuring a song, to taking an accapella and adding production behind it, to making a full-on re-production of a song," he said.

"Artists these days basically want to get as much exposure as possible, so they put out as many different remixes of a song as possible. A perfect example is Shania Twain's 'You're Still the One' - totally a country song. But I have a dance mix of it for the house music charts. They just want to be played in as many different formats as they can, with as much crossover appeal as possible."

Matthias' latest Hot Tracks project was his biggest to date. Working directly with Warner Brothers, Matthias mixed two promo medleys for The B52's new greatest hits album, "Time Capsule." The promo mega-mixes will go to Billboard reporters and professional DJs, but Matthias says a 12-inch version will be available in record stores.

The two mega-mixes - one club dance mix and one radio, are medleys that mix hits like "Love Shack", "Summer Of Love, "Rock Lobster", etc. alongside the likes of the bands' latest single "Debbie."

Matthias said it was a big project for him, taking at least three 15-hour days, but he loves the work.

"My head and heart have always been in the music, the remixing and the production, all the craziness behind-the-scenes stuff! That's what I love doing," he said.

Matthias' spinning can also be heard on local radio on "The Matthias Mix," two hours of brand-spanking- new house music from 10 p.m. to midnight, Tuesdays on KBBF 89.1 FM.
